Name:
Artemis Wright
Age:
16
Trainer Class:
Backpacker
Gender:
Female
Birthplace:
Aquacorde Town (Kalos Region)
Residence:
Slateport City
Story Affiliation:
Team Magma
Rival Gender and Starter:
Male, Mudkip
Appearance:
Small and skinny, Artemis is very unnoticeable and often overlooked thanks to her diminutive size, and that combined with her general attitude and attire leads to people making the mistake of believing she is a young boy. Her skin is very pale, with numerous small marks marring her looks, ranging from pockmarks on her face to several minor scars across her arms, legs and, most notably, one that just grazes the corner of her right eye. She is a girl who looks like she has seen the tough side of life,
Her hair is short, boyishly cut and rather jagged, as though cut by her own hand (which, in fact, it is). It is black in colouration, and often covered in mud and dust, and tangled with twigs, leaves and dirt- she is not, by any means, attractive. Her eyes are light blue and cold, rarely giving away her true feelings- any emotions they do reveal are often expertly faked. She has thin lips, a small nose and barely-noticeable eyebrows, while her face is thin and her cheekbones prominent.
When it comes to attire, Artemis doesn’t have much to choose from. Torn trousers and a slightly-to-small t-shirt make up her clothing, along with shoddy trainers with holes in the soles- not exactly ideal for the winter, but Artemis has learnt to make do and adapt to the cold.
Personality:
Artemis is a rather introverted, quiet girl, one who despises company. She is also highly independent, preferring to take care of herself rather than risk relying upon someone who might betray or abandon her, but her pride is not so great as to ignore aid offered to her, especially when she is in need- for that same reason, she will not refuse a person’s company dependent on her situation. But while Artemis does not trust anybody easily, she does prefer to work with someone than against them. If her recent life has taught her anything, it’s that you stand to gain more by having allies than by making enemies. Her form of teamwork is only ever temporary, lasting long enough to achieve whatever she has decided to work with someone for, but it has become vital to her day to day survival.
This teenager is quick-thinking and intelligent. She prefers to use strategy and careful thought to achieve her goals, mainly due to the fact she has little brawn to work with, and has never had a Pokémon to help her- without a keen mind, she would get nowhere fast. While this has led to a creative mind when it comes to new strategies and techniques- not to mention escape routes when stealing food or other supplies- she is a very grounded person who lives in the real world, and despises any form of daydreaming and make-believe. Her only goal is survival- she has no reason to come up with some make-believe world, or foolish dreams. She also despises showing her emotions, mainly out of fear of it being mistaken for weakness.
History:
Artemis spent the first thirteen years of her life in what she would now call ‘paradise’. Born and raised in Aquacorde Town, many long days were spent out playing with her twin brother, Apollo, and a number of friends, occasionally daring to dive in the river that passed through it and, on more than one occasion, sneaking out of the town to explore the routes nearby, despite the risks from wild Pokémon. Whilst out there, she befriended a couple of wild Fletchling, though she never dared to try catching them- not until she had another Pokémon with her, just in case things turned ugly.
When she was eleven, her parents made the difficult decision to leave the place Artemis and Apollo had been raised, and move to Hoenn- specifically, Slateport. It was here life became hard for them. Earning money was not as easy as expected, and in almost no time at all, the family was nearly bankrupt, getting by purely on what little money Artemis’ mother earned through battling other trainers, though she was only a decent battler. Getting desperate to support them all, Artemis’ father turned to other methods of earning money- namely, crime.
Artemis would not find out for two years about how her father had turned to theft and forgery to make a living- not until she was thirteen, when there was a knock on the door and Artemis’ mother opened it to see a man who had come to inform them her father had been caught and arrested.
Life grew tougher after that. Their mother simply could not support two troublesome teenage children, but was unwilling to let either of them go running across the region as fledgling trainers. A matter of months after her father’s arrest, Artemis realised she had to make what she saw to be the mature choice. She ran away, leaving her mother with only Apollo to care for, and started trying to make a living for herself on the streets.
Needless to say, that didn’t go well. Living homeless in Slateport was tough, and Artemis ended up relying more on other people’s charity than actually fending for herself- at least, for the first year. But gradually she began to become quicker, faster, more cunning, learning how to steal food and get away unnoticed, how to avoid sketchier people and, most importantly to her, to trust nobody but herself.
During her years on the streets, she has had a fair few fights and illnesses, but has attempted to treat them herself and has so far avoided getting medical help, out of fear that she will be sent back to her mother and her family will end up in the same situation as before. She has not seen her family since that day.
Now, aged sixteen, she feels she has the necessary skills to leave Slateport. All she needs is to find herself a Pokémon partner, so she can set out on her journey safely.
