Noelle stared intently as the nurse and her Chansey took the Minun away. She didn't even have time to explain it wasn't even her's. It didn't matter. Medical professionals always seem to be in a hurry.
While she waited, Noelle bought a Lemonade at a nearby vending machine. It shot out a Fresh Water instead. Staring angrily at the machine, she reluctantly took her beverage before inciting an argument with an inanimate object.
"This isn't over..." She whispered, not breaking eye contact with the machine, even as she retreated to her seat. Anyone in the vicinity watching would probably assume Noelle was insane.
As she sat down, she began inspecting the present her brother gave her earlier, or rather, the note enclosed with it. She had barely noticed that there was a second side to the note, a barely legible number next to a small message: "call me if you need me."
Noelle's ears perked up a bit. "Is that so...?"
She took out her PokeGear, and began dialing the number listed. It rang for quite a while before anybody picked up. The loud noise of what seemed to be crumbling rock encompassed the phone. Any voices were just barely audible.
"Hello...?"
"Hi, umm, Matt?"
"Oh, shit. Mallory! Uh, hey, listen, I'm... just a little busy."
"Umm..."
"This is your number, yes? I'll call you back. Oh shit, RUN!!"
An unsettlingly loud roar filled the PokeGear's speaker, before the call disconnected. Noelle simply stared at her device incredulously.
"He called me Mallory... " Noelle's left eye began to twitch, clearly upset being called by her middle name. "Nobody calls me Mallory..."
Before she could argue with yet another inanimate object, Mallory, I mean, Noelle, was interrupted by Nurse Joy, who had brought the now healthy Minun over to her.
"Um, thank you, but it's not mi-" It didn't seem to matter, the nurse was well past earshot now, taking care of yet another injured Pokemon. Medical professionals are always in a hurry.
Noelle tilted her head as she looked at the Minun. Initially confusing it for a Plusle, she took a much more intent look at it. "Huh. You're... different."
Trying to keep her 2-for-2 record of capturing things with no conflict in her part, Noelle took out an empty ball and cradled it confidently in her left hand. She then turned to the newly revitalized Pokemon. She said nothing. Her warm, confident smile said it all.

While the Minun was initially not hers, the electric Pokemon had felt better and warmed up to the human. Had it been continued living in the wild, it'll take a couple more poisons until it would succumb to some severe toxic illness and perish back to the ground. Thankfully, that didn't happen. Smiling at the human and squeaking happily, the mouse went forward and tapped itself on the ball, deciding that joining the human won't be a bad idea after all. The Ball didn't even shake after it was captured! While Nurse Joy herself was busy, one of her few helper Chansey came by to retrieve the roller. It also handed a small Potion to the human as a gift. Even though the young trainer had just started journeying in Hoenn, it had been an eventful day so far!

Noelle smiled warmly as the Minun essentially threw himself into the ball. She picked it up and put the ball away. Day one was barely about to end, and already her team was four strong. She took a deep breath as she sat down and held her hand to her chest. She was deeply worried about her performance within her first few days, and so far it seemed like her adventure was starting off on the right foot.
She took out a book from her bag, a small tome regarding basic Pokemon battling techniques. Even Noelle had to admit that she showed zero brawn in her last captures, it was all brain. She knew that overall survival came from both using her strength as much as her cunning, and she definitely had to admit she knew very little, if at all, about the battling aspect of Pokemon Theory. As a child, she spent so long reading about overall care of Pokemon, she could consider herself a hell of a breeder.
Yet, this was different. Raising an impressive team wasn't worth anything if she didn't know how to efficiently lead it.
Noelle carefully pored over the text for about two hours, gathering a basic understanding of the more complex, yet still basic aspects of battling. Always an avid book-learner, the young trainer couldn't wait to go take her newly-found knowledge and use it on the field.
She yawned loudly. The clock on her PokeGear read exactly midnight. Perhaps it was time to sleep. Stretching lazily, Noelle put her book away and fell asleep on her seat, gripping her backpack tightly as she slept.
The following morning was met by an excited Noelle, who stepped on Mauville City's streets joyfully. She wandered around the city trying to find her way around, before her PokeGear began to ring. Fumbling around with her bag, Noelle eventually grabbed it, and answered. She had no idea who was calling her, but really, was there anybody else who would?
"H-hello?"
"Oh! Mallory! What's up?"
"Um... not much."
"Whew. And here I thought I wasn't going to be able to hear from you. Did the Fletching get to you okay?"
"Y-yeah. I named her Nikki."
"Good, good... so... how does it feel?"
"Excuse me?"
"To escape! To run away from all that authoritarian anti-Pokemon bullshit. How does it feel?"
"O-oh. Um... well, I like it. I actually feel... free."
"Very good. Where in Hoenn are you headed to right now?"
Noelle thought for a moment. By now she had now wandered to the exact center of town: the intersection leading to four potential exits. She really didn't know where she was going to go. She was just content with finding an exit, but it seemed to appear to be four of them now.
"Well?"
"Um... I'm going somewhere in Hoenn. I... um, don't even know where I am, but I'm... headed... some...where."
"Seriously? You're just going to wing it?"
"I think... I mean, I know what I want to do. I want to get strong, and get badges, and... y'know, be Champion."
"Champion! Mallory the little Hoenn Elite Four Champion. Ha. I'll be there that day to see that."
"You don't believe me?"
"Are you kidding me, Mallory? You're at least twice as smart as I am. If what I did in a few years is any indication, you should be within superstardom in a few months."
"Umm..."
"But you need to get your sea legs, little sister. You can't just keep wandering around Hoenn like a lost kitty."
"Hey, Matt? One question."
"Shoot."
"How do you know where I am?"
"Didn't you read the letter?"
"The letter...? Oh, you mean that stupid part about me not knowing the truth yet... at least tell me this: are you up to something... bad?"
"I... don't know if I can answer that question honestly."
"Huh?"
"Heh. I mean, the answer's yes and no. I'm not the perfect paragon of goodness you are, Mallory. The world's much more gray than 'good' or 'bad.' You're an individual who took the conscious decision to summon, train, and battle supernatural creatures with powers vast overcoming basic human resistance. You'll see what I mean when you're faced with a decision you're going to regret later on."
"I... see."
"But hey! Enough of that sad bullshit! Welcome to the world of Pokemon. So let's go back to you. Tell me more about the place you're in. Last I heard you had arrived in Slateport. I assume you moved on. Are you in a place with a shit-ton of bicycles now?"
Noelle looked around, at the very least, she did manage to see a bicycle store.
"Um... there's a bike shop here."
"Good. Now, head towards the G-"
At that moment, the call seemed to drop. Noelle tried to call her brother back, but he didn't answer back. Noelle sighed. Noelle slung her bag on her back, and gripped her PokeGear tightly in case her brother charged his own and called her back. Hoping to gather more intel, Noelle entered the bike shop.
"Hello...?"

A bit clueless on where she was in Hoenn, the young trainer had another call and talk with her brother, only to have the other end interrupted again. Either her reception was really bad or her brother really had to drop the phone and go. On the plus side, she was starting to read about Pokemon Battling, which would be helpful in the future.
As she walked toward the bike shop, it looked a little bit quirky on its own. The store front have display bikes brightly shining and reflecting the indoor city lights. The bikes were placed outside of the store, and also bolted and chained to the ground in case someone wanted to steal display bikes. Once inside, the store employees greeted her with a "Welcome to Ryder's Bike Store!" Well, there was really just the store owner and another employee, who does bike maintenance.
The store owner, standing behind the counter, greeted the girl with a smile, "Hello there! What kind of bikes would you like?" Though the store owner was also pretty sure this girl wasn't from around here.

Noelle tilted her head. She didn't really seem the kind of person who needed a bike, or even bikes for that matter. It's not like she had the money for one anyway, as convenient as she'd find it.
"Um... hi. I'm not really looking for a bicycle." Noelle said sheepishly. "I'm just, um, kinda wandering around the town. I need to find some other town with a gym I can get to... not, um, not here. I'll get thrashed if I challenge a gym right now..."
She cleared her throat. "Um, I saw a map with two nearby labels: Verdanturf Town, or Lavaridge Town. I... have no idea where any of those places are. Where do you think I should head?"

Upon knowing that the girl can't afford a bike, wasn't looking for a bike, and lost, the store owner's expression changed a little to disappointment. Then the owner looked at the girl and smiled, while having a hand pointing the air as the owner explained, "Well, Lavaridge Town is north of here, and Verdanturf town is west of here. If you exit the shop and follow the signs in the city, it'll tell you whether you're going north or west. Once you're at the city gate it'll tell you which city you're heading toward."
The owner paused a bit, and then resumed, as tourism wasn't the industry that this store was about. "Well, I can't really tell you where to go. You're the trainer and adventurer! Lavaridge Town is next to the Mt. Chimney though, and they have hot springs there. Verdanturf Town have a lot of pretty flowers in the west. The wind just blow the right way to not blow volcano ashes on the town, so the flower grow pretty well."

Noelle paused for thought. She'd really have to look at the signs the shopkeeper told her about, as he might as well have been talking in Korean once he started talking about cardinal directions.
"R-right." Noelle nodded slowly, as he explained about each town to her. Fallabor seemed the most appealing. Hot springs sounded nice right about then, and Mt. Chimney sounded like an ideal spot to find a fire-type or two. It was decided (internally, at least). She'd head towards Fallabor Town, and see how it goes.
"Thank you so much." Noelle smiled warmly, bowing politely, before heading out the door.
As she walked towards the north boundaries of Mauville, she began to play around with her PokeGear once more, rather, she was trying to call her brother back.
"The number you have dialed is-"
Noelle sighed and ended the call, moving on. Surely Matt would call back when he's ready. In any case, it was now time for Noelle to focus on the road ahead, as she had finally reached the northern outskirts of Mauville City, Route 111.
"Next stop: Mt. Chimney!" Noelle declared cheerfully, as she began trekking through the grassy knoll as she usually did, humming a cheerful tune as she walked.

Hoping to call back her brother, Noelle called but to no avail. She resumed her travel toward Mt. Chimney, and hummed her tune happily as she exited Mauville City to the north. While the tune might be alien to wild Pokemon like the electric mouse she encountered earlier, to most humans, maybe she was just bored and needed something to distract herself while traveling. Her traveling peacefulness was soon disrupted by a pair, a youngster playing fetch with his Zigzagoon. He tossed a discus in the air, and as it was pulled downward by gravity, the furry Zigzagoon ran in zigzag after it, until it leaped in the air to bite it down. It would be almost like playing fetch with a dog, except a raccoon. When the Zigzagoon went back to retrieve the discus to its owner for another round, it stopped to see another human approaching. It dropped the dicus and growled at the human. "Oh, hello! Are you a trainer? I'm playing discus with my Zigzagoon! Are you a trainer?--" He wasn't sure, and then saw the pokeballs in her belt, "Oh, you are! Let's have a battle then!"

Noelle took a deep breath, and grinned confidently. She was more than eager to fight and try to use her book-learning in the field.
She nodded as the young trainer asked her if she was a trainer, she said nothing, but instead let her actions do the talking.
"Go, Seraph!!" Noelle cried out, as she tossed out a Pokeball, letting out her Fletching. Noelle blinked. That was not the correct ball. "Um, okay. Never mind. Go, Nikki!"
Noelle tried to remember possible moves that Nikki could potentially know from the book she was reading yesterday. She pointed forward as she shouted her command.
"Alright, Nikki! Use Peck!"
Nikki did not move, instead she looked at Noelle curiously.
"Ummm... Ember?"
Still no response. Noelle rubbed her chin for a moment. This was going to be harder than she thought. She sighed deeply and thought of the simplest attack she could think of.
"Alright, Nikki... um... Tackle!"
That one seemed to do it. Nikki let out a loud chirp and extended her wings, flying rapidly towards the Zigzagoon, in an attempt to charge at it.

Without adding more comment that she was a trainer, Noelle was having quite an embarrassing moment as she grabbed the wrong Pokeball by mistake, as well as calling moves that Nikki hadn't learned yet. However, the boy was much more distracted by the bird's appearance. "Woah! I have never seen this Pokemon before! It's got pretty feathers! It looks pretty cool!" He cried excitedly, bending down and jumping to get a closer look, since he can't simply walk over because a battle was going on. His voice was raised and his smiled expanded as he was about to battle this strange and new Pokemon that he could tell others about when he was done battling. "Ooh, Amanda! Let's start off with a Tail Whip!" When he finished his couple seconds long excitement, he ordered his Pokemon to use a move. The foreign bird moved first, spreading her wings and try to fly, but it was still a new thing to her. She was more like hopping on the ground quickly as she raced toward the Zigzagoon with a tackle. Amanda could definitely feel the hit from this little bird, as it cried in pain. It then went forward and seemingly playfully slapped the bird with her fluffy tail, possibly shedding some furs in the process as the furs were tangled with the feathers.

Nikki chirped intermittently as she was being feather-dusted by Amanda's tail, as if to denote laughter. She was rather ticklish, and this left her quite open for attacks, effectively lowering her defenses.
Noelle bit her thumbnail as she began thinking of any other possible moves she might be able to use. She couldn't copy the Youngster's command, as Nikki had no tail, well she did, but it wasn't like a monkey's tail, it was more of a drag-reducing flap for when she flew. Noelle thought for a bit. Another staple from her beginner's book was Growl, a potential cut to the foe's power. Noelle thought she might as well give it a try.
"Okay..." Noelle crossed her arms, slightly letting out a small sigh. She hoped this would work... "Nikki, use Growl!"
Nikki chirped loudly once more and turned towards Amanda, cawing loudly, or well, as much as a small bird could. Noelle smiled nervously. That looked much more adorable than intimidating.
"Um... let's try Tackle after that, yes?" Noelle began biting her thumb-nail once more, hoping she wasn't doing as poorly as she thought she was.

Hearing the Growl, Amanda could feel the obnoxious chirp tingling from its ears to its body, weakening its attack thereafter. The youngster covered his ears, as he couldn't believe something this small could make a pitch and tune this annoying. Then, he ordered his Pokemon to growl back to get back at the bird, making a soft growl that sounded like a cross between a Teddiursa and Poochyena or something. Then, when Nikki was hopping forward for a Tackle, he ordered his Pokemon to use another growl to stop it. Thankfully for Nikki, she was fast enough to hit the Zigzagoon before she got blasted with close range adorable furball growl. How could you resist such an adorable Zigzagoon? "Good job, Amanda!" the kid cheered naively, and little did he know, his Pokemon was close to passing out.

Noelle bit her thumb. It was almost over, but she couldn't think of another move to use. Anything else she had read in her book remained unknown to Nikki, so it's not like she could try anything new.
Sighing, she extended her finger once more and yelled out her command. It was now or never.
"Almost there! T-Tackle!"
Chirping obediently, the Fletchling began to hop rapidly towards the Zigzagoon once more, charging as much as a tiny little bird could.

Upon hearing the human's command, Nikki charged forward, hopping on the ground quickly to get the opponent to focus on her. Then, when she was ready, she slammed forward with all her tiny bird's might. The impact was good enough for Amanda to pass out though. The youngster's body relaxed and wasn't as tense anymore. His enthusiasm for this battle turned into a frown. "Aww... You did great Amanda! Thank you for the battle, miss!" He shouted and thanked the trainer, and then proceeded to return his unconscious Pokemon and handed Noelle her prize money. This battle was quite quick, but perhaps Noelle had learned a bit more about Pokemon battling.

Noelle exhaled deeply, as the tiny bird made its final impact with the Zigzagoon. She won her first battle, and felt a bit more confident in the process. She turned towards the Youngster, and smiled as she watched him take care of his Pokemon before recalling it. Noelle nodded and followed suit, pointing her ball towards Nikki.
"Good job." She said softly, as the red beam embossed the Fletchling, effectively recalling it back to its capsule-home.
Before she knew it, the kid approached Noelle and handed her what seemed to be... money?
Noelle looked at the bills and coins on her palm, and then back Calvin, and then back at the money, and then back at Calvin. Is this how it works in the real world? Get into fights with Pokemon and then the winner gets money?
"No, thank you... I think." Noelle said, still rather stupefied. It had just hit her that she had to earn money in some form. She still had to produce income, now that she was living on her own. Sure, her supplies would last her a few more days, especially at the very modest rate at which Noelle ate, but when they'd run out, she'd be screwed.
Noelle moved on northbound, still in a bit of culture shock to what it came to being a trainer.
"So this means... I shouldn't lose that many fights, or I'll soon see myself without money..."
