When Dagrun and her pokemon arrived at Lavaridge Town, they went directly to the gym, after a short detour to the Pokemon Center. It was time for their first big test. Dagrun herself was impatient, it wasn't her ninja team but she still wanted the pokemon to do good and see if they were on the right track. As another little preparation, she handed out an oran berry to Takara and Fiera.
"Huuuh, it is really hot in here, isn't it?" Asked Dagrun her pokemon as they entered, and they agreed. "I'm going to recall most of you I think. I'd like for the gym leader not to know what she can expect, or else it can give her an advantage," explained and her pokemon accepted. Most of them looked a bit disappointed. The only one she let stay outside was Baldrian, and he looked curiously at her. "I'm not going to use you, not against a fire type gym! And I guess you'd like to watch and help me cheer on the others?" Asked Dagrun and Baldrian grinned to her as answer. He was pleased with this solution.
"Anybody here? I'd like to challenge the gym leader," called Dagrun out loud as she walked deeper into the gym. Hopefully the leader or an assistant would show up soon, and hopefully Flannery wouldn't be too busy today.

Inside the Flannery Gym, it was like a constant warm sauna. The indoor temperature seemed to have gone up like it was a hot summer every day. How does anyone in here handle the heat? Maybe they take a lot of break to hydrate themselves, or they put on skin protecting things. Though even without the damaging aspect of the sun, that much heat can't be good for you, right? Once Dagrun had her situation sorted with which Pokemon to use, and her Baldrian cheering on with the dazzling flowery hands. An assistant to Flannery appeared from behind a door, with a headband on her forehead to absorb sweat or something. She was dressed in light weight and thin clothing, possibly made of air drying material. If anything, maybe just the ARENA part of the gym was super warm. The other parts probably was much more cooler and milder. "Hey there! You came in just in time for Gym Leader Flannery, why don't I take you to your side of the arena, okay?" She responded, and led the way for Dagrun, showing where the challenger would stand. "Before we begin, here is the Hoenn Gym Challenge Rules. The Gym Leader will send out Pokemon to challenge your skills as a trainer.
One, the number of Pokemon she sent out will be based on your number of current badges. If you can show me your trainer card in a bit, we can look it up. Sometimes people lost their physical badge, but we store the data at the end of each battle so they can look it up in Pokemon League. I heard they have a system to store and back up data in case power goes out, but I am derailing from the rules.
Two, you can use as many Pokemon as you can carry, which would be six Pokemon, per official International Pokemon , some organizations I forget, rules.
Three, if you happen to use any item in the challenge, that is not your Pokemon's held item, the gym leader is able to use an item of equal function and equal amount. So if you use an X Accuracy, Flannery, could use an X Defense. If you use a healing item, she got one too!
Fourth, you can take as many tries as you want to battle the gym leader. Should you finally win the gym match, you will be awarded a badge, a Technical Machine that is related to the gym leader's specialty. Should you win the match at a special challenge level, you will be awarded a special prize, as well." She closed the official rule book, and exhaled deeply and annoyed by the seemingly long rules, that are required by the League to be stated before every gym battle. At least this is shorter than any of Roxanne's lectures. "Now that the rules are out of the way, let me get Flannery. Wish you the best of luck."Then, she grabbed a little device from her shorts and clicked, possibly to signal Flannery from whichever room she came from. On the opposite of Dagrun, a door opened and Flannery casually walked through. She cleared her throat before she started. "Heyy! Trainer!" She then shouted, and then was confused by how loud that was. "Challenger," She raised her voice to speak, but not in a yelling match way. "You've got what it takes to challenge your FIRST gym battle? Can you handle the heat of an intense battle?"
"Well, that sounded corny. Pardon me, I am still new to this gym leader thing. Well, let's get this thing started. Go, Slugma!" She shook her head again at the introduction thing, and then sent a Pokemon to just get pass the awkward introduction.
Gym Leader Flannery sent out her first Pokemon, a Level 12 Slugma.

Dagrun didn't have to wait long for an answer as an assistant arrived from a door not long after she had worded her challenge. "Thank you, that would be nice," answered Dagrun and followed the assistant, while she pulled in her clothes to get some air. Darn it was hot, she was not dressed for this kind of temperatures. She hoped it wouldn't give her any problems with concentrating during the match, it would definitely only become hotter when they started to throw flames around. She glanced at the assistant and thought her dress code was much more suitable for working here, but again if she hand't she probably wouldn't be working here at all.
Dagrun listened to the long explanations of the rules mostly to be sure there hand't been changed anything from last time she checked, and she handed over her trainer card when she was asked. "That should be easy to figure out, this is my first ever gym battle!" Dagrun said excited while the assistant looked at her trainer card. It wasn't a lie as she hadn't challenged a gym before. With all the training and missions there simply hadn't been time, and the Elders didn't thought it would be a challenge for the ninjas so it was seen as a bit of waste of time. Dagrun knew that some of her fellow ninjas had taken the gym challenges, and one even made it as far as the Championship. He had made sure he hadn't got far as it has just been a smokescreen for his real work. Just like Dagrun was now although she was a bit eager to try it out and see for herself, if the skills of the gym leaders was worth anything.
Dagrun chuckled at the assistants statement of having forgot the name of the internal organisation that were arranging it all. She had some guts to just say that and not trying to hide it.
"And I understand the rules, thank you," Dagrun said and exhaled as she took her spot on the battle arena. She barely got wonder how long she should wait and potential get nervous, before Flannery arrived. Dagrun smiled as the gym leaders confusion about her own strength of voice. If the battle skills were at the same level as the showed professionalism the Elders were right in their view, and this wouldn't be too much trouble for her. She laughed at Flannery's challenge of her that was followed by an apology. "You are not making it easy for me to answer you! But yes, I am ready to face you, I hope," Dagrun answered and looked at the burning slug that was then released. It didn't look like much and this was used for a challenger's first match, so it probably wasn't the most threatening. On the other hand, a gym battle usually weren't easy for a normal trainer and Dagrun's own team was not as well trained as a ninja one. It probably fit their level just right, so the question was whom to start with.
"Go Takara!" Dagrun called out and the trapinch looked around curiously. "You are the first one in this battle, and that is your opponent. It shouldn't be thrilled about dirt and sand, so start with a Sand Tomb!" Dagrun ordered and watched as the trapinch quickly dug a whole with slippery sides, that would trap the slugma. "Follow it up by a Bulldoze!"
Dagrun looked at Flannery to see her reaction, pretending she hoped to get some recognition from the gym leader.

Despite her young age, Flannery observed and listened as the opponent called out the first move. The Trapinch was moving fast in the fire type's direction, digging and spitting at the ground, aiming for the radius of where the Slugma was standing. "Uh, not so fast! I've battled enough water, ground, and rock type Pokemon to see every move get used more than once," The red haired trainer scoffed. "Slugma, jump and use Light Screen!"
The fiery Pokemon leaped a few inches into the air, but not very far because it wasn't a flying or a Pokemon known for jumping. However, in the few seconds that it was in the air, the ground underneath opened up just as where the Trapinch would be trapping the opponent. Instead, the Slugma landed on the ground, on a flat, invisible surface created from the Light Screen. Normally it would protect the user from the intensity of special category moves, and in this gym leader trained Pokemon, it doubled as a makeshift floor. "Not bad, but I've seen Sandstorm and Sand Tomb a couple times already. Now, go for an incinerate!" Flannery cheered as she used the first offensive fire type move in this battle. The Slugma opened its mouth and released a bright fireball at the opponent. The ground type survived the hit easily, but the Oran Berry she was holding was burnt, and fell out of her holding spot, looking burnt to the crisp and unusable. Takara sneezed and then the fragile berry broke apart. After that, Takara hadn't forget to use Bulldoze. She inhaled deeply and then jumped on the ground, creating a shock wave and blow of dust on the ground, knocking the Slugma out completely in one move. "Not bad for your first fight. You did great, Slugma, return!" She held out a Pokeball to return the fainted Pokemon. The assistant, of course, naturally announced the Slugma was unable to battle, and Flannery was to send her second, and last Pokemon.

"That was just a warm up, get ready for a sauna. Go, Torkoal!" She sent out her second Pokeball, revealing a tortoise looking Pokemon. It was quite a tough looking one, and blowing some steam off from its nose as it got ready, or maybe it was trying to look tough to the opponent.

Flannery's creative counter to the Sand Tomb took Dagrun by surprise and she smiled humored. This Gym leader at least would do her best to be a challenge, this might actually be an interesting battle! She almost forgot that she had to pretend to be new at this stuff. "Ih! What happened? How did you do that?" She exclaimed and slapped a hand to her mouth in shock. Takara winced from the hot fire and shoot her little body afterwards. She didn't even notice that the berry had disappeared as she stomped down and sent a shock wave through the earth towards her opponent. It was more than the slugma could endure and Dagrun was secretly a bit disappointed it had been so easy, hopefully Flannery's next pokemon would be a bigger challenge. She knew it was a weird way to think, but this wasn't a dangerous battle as the ones she usually had and then it was most fun if she was challenged. She could of course just have challenged Flannery with less trained pokemon but she didn't think that was fair for her team, even though they were just there as a disguise.
"Well done Takara! That's how you do it!" Dagrun shouted out her praise to accompany Baldrian who was jumping up and down and waving his flowers around. Dagrun snorted as he looked like a cheerleader and she wondered if he knew or if it was just a coincidence. Takara trotted over to them to join the celebrating which irked Dagrun. She would have preferred that the young pokemon stayed out and had been ready to challenge the next opponent the moment it was out of the pokeball. Such maneuvers had saved her more than once as a ninja, but she was well aware that this was a gentelman battle and of course Flannery's next pokemon should get the time to know what was going on before being attacked. She did her best to be supporting to Takara and win her over, at the moment it looked like it worked fine.
As Dagrun was about to send Takara out against the torkoal she suddenly changed her mind. She wanted to see Fiera in action and if the heat and such would change the dull pokemon's behavior. She grabbed the numel's pokeball and released the pokemon to the field. If this didn't go well, it would be the perfect cover for her and really put her into the minds of people as a new semi-inexperienced trainer. "This is an important battle Fiera! Show us what you got and give it a Mangetude!" Dagrun called out cheerfully to the numel who had closed her eyes and enjoyed the heat. An ear twitched when she heard the order and she opened her eyes slightly to glance around through her eyelashes. She Focused her energies and looked for weak spots at the fire tortoise but otherwise didn't move an inch. "Fiera? Can you hear me?" Called Dagrun and noted down in her mind that the temperature didn't seem to do any difference this time.

"It took us some time, but I was just training my Slugma to use Light Screen for some other ways, like standing on it. That special trick had helped us out of some tight spots before, heehee," Flannery responded, giggling and also blushing a little. She was probably blushing from being asked, and not the heat. Although Fiera barely moved after being sent out to the battle, through the steamy fog. Anyone could see Fiera's body glowed calmly from her focusing the energy, even if you could not see her opening her eyelids. However, while she was concentrating, Flannery didn't waste time to give her Torkoal an order. "Torkoal, go for a Smog! Make it volcanic ash smoggy!" Anyone who didn't study volcanoes or never been to one might have missed this weird note added after the command. Sure enough, the tortoise inhaled deeply, and then exhaled a thick layer of black, poisonous clouds from the nostrils, sending the smog toward the Numel. The opponent fire type unfortunately had breathed in the toxic fumes. Fiera could feel her body revolting from the developing sickness. Thankfully for the humans, the air ventilation system were designed to help the humans out to not breathe in, along with how big the arena for the Pokemon were. If anyone did get sick, another one of Flannery's assistance knows the basic about taking care of human's health. They don't have Pokemon Center, after all. After the Numel stumbled a little on the verge of vomiting, the sleepy fire type perked up a bit, and lightly tapped the ground with her forelegs, checking something. Then, she cried and stomped on the ground, shaking the earth as hard as she could muster. "Torkoal, Protect!" The gym leader shouted loudly as soon as she saw the Numel practicing her feet. After all, Numels were kind of a common Pokemon around Lavaridge area. The Torkoal quickly withdrew inside its shell, and created a barrier that negated any damage the Numel wanted to hit it with. When the shaking was done, the protective fire type safely came out of its shell, exhaled happily.

"I don't doubt it," Dagrun said honestly impressed, although it made no difference for the outcome of that battle. Dagrun was pleased to see that Flannery were going to be a bigger of a challenge than most regular trainers, even if she was the first gym leader and had chosen a team that should be a proper one for Dagrun's pokemon. The poison could give Fiera problems in the long run and with how she cough it was affecting her already. Dagrun wondered if it had affected what she had been doing and much to her surprise it seemed to wake up the numel. Fiera shook her head when the poison took effect before she slammed her sturdy feet into the ground and forced it to shake. Dagrun was quite sure it was a strong one as even she and her two spectator pokemon lost their balance and fell to the ground, but it was nothing with how the torkoal bounced around. When the ground stilled and Fiera shook from the pain of the poison, Dagrun got to her feet and hled her breath while she looked at the torkoal. Had it worked? A moment later the torkoal popped out of its shell and looked as fine as ever, Dagrun huffed disappointed but the took a deep breath and put on her ever-happy attitude again. "That was a quick save you made there, but it won't help you many times. I do know how Protect works," Dagrun called cheerfully out to Flannery. "Come on Fiera, you can do it! That was so great and it can't keep protecting itself. Try again, I'm sure you will get it this time!" Dagrun shouted encouragingly to her numel, who looked everything but dull and slow. Fiera blew some smoke but was well aware that would make little difference on another fire type, so instead she reared and slammed her front feet hard into the ground once more. (ooc: I'm pretty sure I have talked with you about it already, but anyway: Careful only doing the moves I note here in the ooc, since my pokemon often doesn't do what they are ordered, and that is why I note what is used down here. "You're quite persistent!" Flannery commented on Dagrun's continued use with Magnitude, but then again, she's also using Protect again. "I started using that words a lot more now, you have no idea how smart Roxanne is! I also have trainers who like using the same Water Gun over and over. Torkoal, go for another Protect!"Flannery's Torkoal blew out some smoke from its nose, and then created another protective barrier once more, blocking the magnitude that Fiera was making. The ground was shaking for sure, but the Torkoal was standing motionless, and maybe even bored, like the Magnitude was just a boring shuffling of the deck from the dealer. Usually this connection of Protect would make most opponent aggravated, but Flannery was just observing for now. Additionally, using Protect was kind of a gamble, that the young gym leader liked to take.

Dagrun smiled at Flannery's comment, there wasn't much else she could do with how limited her pokemon's moves still were. And it wouldn't help much by throwing in any of the other pokemon. Her only hope really, lay in that they eventually would get through the protect, since switching to another move that was less damaging would just get Flannery a chance to restart the Protect's effectiveness. "It is tough to have a creative tactic against you guys, when you are limited in what you have of options," Dagrun pointed out with a chuckle. "I'd wish we could do something else than go for the same move again and again, especially since Fiera has been poisoned so the longer this last the bigger the risk of us loosing," Dagrun said but didn't look like she really worried about it. "I don't doubt that Roxanna is a great gym leader, you have perhaps trained with her?" Dagrun asked while she waited for Fiera to do her next move. She had the feeling the numel wouldn't listen to her anyway. She was pleased to see the fire in her eyes, so perhaps what the numel needed to live up was some proper opponents.
Fiera didn't listen to what the humans were blabbering about, she just wanted to pay back the torkoal for the continued pain from the poison, and the humiliation from avoiding her attacks. She snorted and rose on her backlegs before she slammed her front legs full force into the ground once more. Hopefully this time it would get through.

"Well, it is limiting for me to use my choice of Pokemon when you just started your gym challenge. The strength and power of Pokemon I use are based on how many badges you have," Flannery replied. She decided to switch up after using Protect a lot, as the accuracy of that moves go down when you use more. Additionally, she was also worried about what other five Pokemon Dagrun would have. A challenge might looked like they have an easier job with maximum of bringing six Pokemn to a gym, but the gym leader actually had the role of taking them out one by one as well. "Alright Torkoal, go for an Incinerate!" She ordered. The tortoise roared in response, but the dull camel had the upper hand now, as her patience was running out. She slammed her front legs and unleashed a small earthquake, shaking the ground, and therefore damaging the Torkoal. The armored pokemon still survived though. Then, the smokey Pokemon retaliated by unleashing a huge volume of heat from its body, burning up the Oran Berry that the camel was holding. "We gym leaders train time to time, as a tactic and skills level check, and giving each other comments and ideas, but that happens once in a while, we have other stuffs to do too." She replied, and wondered what would be Dagrun's next move.

"I'm glad you are giving me a chance!" Dagrun grinned having no hard feelings that Flannery was using her less experienced team to fight her. She knew that information before and she found it fair, it was an easy way for trainers to test their abilities, work on their skills and generally learn about being trainers. If the gym leaders always used their best pokemon, which would be really good considering how many challengers most of them had, few trainers would stand any chance, and their entire team would be wiped out before they got a chance to learn anything. Dagrun winced when Flannery ordered for another incinerate. So much for her idea of using some of her berries, it was really a waste. She blinked a few times as she realized that she herself even had learned something knew today, and then grinned.
Dagrun just smiled at Flannery's comment of gym leaders doing other stuff than taking challengers. She knew that, she wasn't a kid who believed the teachers didn't really have a life outside of school, and could be shopping and such.
Fiera didn't look good and Dagrun wanted to save most of her items for when it was important (aka her ninja team) and not for her fun times with her cover team. "You did so well Fiera, you deserve a rest!" Dagrun declared overly gratefully and recalled the numel who looked like she had been ready with another earthshaking stomp. "But I'm not done yet! Let's see what you are saying to this one!" Dagrun said cheerfully and let out Warin who appeared mid air and quickly focused on the torkoal. Takara cheered loudly and Baldrian joined in. "Let's give it something to think about Warin! Give it a Supersonic and follow it up by a Water gun!" Dagrun ordered excitedly and was genuin surprised when Warin did as she said.
He rose a bit send a eerie soundwave at the fire tortoise before he dived and as he glided towards his opponent he sent a blast of water at it.

"Of course, you're not done. I haven't get the chance to wipe out half your team yet, which is good, for your first gym," Flannery replied, a little sarcastically. "Okay, I got carried away sweeping trainers with five Poochyena yesterday." She then watched her challenger changed from a Numel to a Wingull, and noted the interesting choice. "Now you're going straight for offense. Torkoal, go for a quick Smog!" She ordered. Just as Dagrun had swapped out her Pokemon, the fire type readily decompressed its shell, releasing a purple cloud of poisonous smoke. Thankfully, the flying Pokemon only took some damage from it, but flew away to clear air before the poison got into the body. Then, the Wingull cawed an annoying sound, aiming to confuse the Torkoal. The gym leader responded with a quick Protect, because having her last Pokemon confused might spell doom too soon for this battle. Afterwards, Warin dove downwards from the sky for a quick Water Gun, putting out a lot of heat from the Torkoal. "Hang in there, Torkoal. Give the Wingull your best Incinerate!" She hollered, watching her Pokemon down to silver of its stamina. The Torkoal was struggling to stand, but before Warin could fly away to safety, the fire type unleashed a loud and firey incinerate, scorching Warin's stamina by a lot. The bird was coughing as he flew away.

Dagrun laughed. "I hope not, since then Baldrian would have to help out as well!" She joked and gestured to the roselia at her side. She was well aware that she had more pokemon on her hands that would be more useful, but there was no reason to let Flannery know that. "Poochyeenas?Funny choice for a gym like this, have you ever had someone challenging with a team full of pokemon who had disadvantage?" Dagrun asked sincerely curious. She could understand that some people preferred single types, or had a favorite species of pokemon they wanted to master, but that only made sense if you made sure to train them so they could do well against the gym you were going to challenge. She had heard about fishers having a lot of magikarps but she had always assumed it was just what they caught and not that it was their favorite pokemon nor that they trained them.
Dagrun looked nervous as Warin and the torkoal exchanged attacks, some of her plan went through and some dit not. Warin looked battered after being hit by the incinerate. "Will he make it?" Dagrun mumbled most to seem uncertain and inexperienced to her pokemon as well. Takara looked worried at her before looking scared after her "father", Baldrian shot the trapinch a quick glance before he patted Dagrun reassuringly. She smiled down at him. "You are right, he is strong and fast and he has advantage. He can do this!" Dagrun declared as she realized it would matters worse for her relationship with Takara. "You can do it Warin! You are so fast it cannot keep up with you! Take it down, do it for Takara!" Dagrun shouted encouragingly and Baldrian and Takara added theirs cheer into the mix.
Warin looked much more determined and dived down to hit the torkoal with another water gun.

"Yeah, I have had trainers coming in with interesting choices of Pokemon," Flannery replied, "That's what my grandpa would say, but I just call them 'surprise Pokemon', heehee. Grass types, bug types, normal types Pokemon who can't stand my Torkoal. Ice types are rare actually. Someone tried coming in with Silcoon and Cascoon, because they thought the heat helped evolution faster. I asked them if they're sure they want to do this in a fire gym, and that they can check Pokemon research on the evolution. That trainer left without battling. haha."After the opponent had ordered her response, Flannery was going to order her trusty Torkoal for another Protect, but she was too late, as the wet avian swooped down and fired a simple shot of water, sapping the fire type's remaining health. The tortoise collapsed on the floor, and the battle judge declared Dagrun as the winner. "Wow, you did well in this battle!" the gym leader cheered, as she returned her Pokemon and then made her way to present the prizes to Dagrun. Her assistant returned from some gym leader office with various things, such as some prize money, a gym badge, and a disc containing Technical Machine Overheat. "Here are your rewards for completing this challenge! I hope whoever's your next one will give you a hard time too, heehee. I hope you had fun as much as I did!"

"Really? It was good you got them to turn around instead of them ending up as friend snacks!" Dagrun exclaimed laughing. "Coons! Who would be ever take those to fight in a fire gym!" She thought aloud with a shake of her head, she knew their evolutions could have a chance when they evolved but sending them in as immobile cocoons was suicide.
Their chatting got interrupted as Warin ended the battle and came out on top of it. "We won! You did it Warin! You won the battle!" Dagrun exclaimed and even demeaned herself to jump up and down in pretended delight. Warin returned produly to the others and basked in their awe for a moment before he turned to Takara. "We did it together, I could not have done it without you, don't forget that," he said warmly and nuzzled her with his beak. "I'm so proud of you all, thank you," Dagrun said and was pleased she managed to let er voice break and she wiped away a non-existing tear which did the trick and her pokemon came over to give her hugs.
Dagrun quickly stood up again as Flannery approached and she chuckled awkwardly. "Thanks, it was really hard and I learned a lot!" Dagrun said gratefully which wasn't a complete lie. "Oh! I get things too? Thanks, I'm certain they will come in handy. And you bet! This was really fun!" She answered and then added with a wry smile, "the next gyms I'm meeting really have something to live up to, that's for sure!"
She said her goodbyes and left the gym with her pokemon, pondering what to do next.
(ooc: Thanks for a fun gym battle! I'm looking forward for the next ones! Since I don't plan on getting any pokemon that evolved with a Fire Stone, I'd like the Charcoal and I would like to get Fiera to hold it right away. Warin forgets Water Gun to learn Water Pulse)
