Mirella was back in Petalburg after an unplanned trip to Rustboro and visit at her father's. All in all it had been rather enjoyable when first the odd encounter had been over with, and now Mirella was trying to reimagine her situation. She wanted a new place to live for several reasons, and despite the current heat enclosing half of Hoenn she was out looking at affordable houses. She had already arranged for her small apartment to be put up for sale within the week, and wanted to get a headstart in finding a new home. She had one specific house in mind and had already found it still on the market, though it had been up for months. It interested her both because she had helped renovate it, and it stood a bit isolated from the city. People tended to stay away from the surrounding area for some reason; probably why it hadn't been sold yet; and it spoke to Mirella's want for being alone. That's how she found herself outside the house premise, dressed for the warm weather in white shirt and shorts. The shade of the cap protected her eyes from the worst glare of the sun, and beside her Fly had made a habit of filling the hot air with bursting bubbles, so a mist of water droplets coated Mirella's bare legs half the time. Mirella loved the feeling. It wasn't much different from being sprayed by seawater when out fishing. (Wordcount: 245)

The weather had been quite hot, and humans and Pokemon alike were finding ways to adapt to this atrocious weather. Mirella had in mind to check out this new house on sale that would be isolated from a lot of humans, although she didn't invite her realtor to see the inside, but taking a look on the outside would be a good idea too. However, regardless what the trainer was doing with her money, the outdoor heat was something else to handle with. The sun was blazing hard, and family of Pokemon found themselves resting underneath a tree's shade in front of the house. A pair of Linoone and a young Zigzagoon seemed to be tired from the summer heat, and rested and laid their body low to cool down, even to avoid as much movement as possible. When Mirella approached, they only perked their ears and opened their eyes. Well, just a human, not too bad. They weren't the only one there though. As upon a closer look, a pair of Beuatifly were resting on the tree's top. One was seriously injured from the battle and seemed to be recovering slowly, albeit with difficulty with the heat. It even have some burn injury as part of its wings looked singed. The other one, probably a friend or a partner, fluttered up close to the human as if asking her for help.
A Beautifly was asking Mirella's help!

Mirella was surprised to find so many Pokemon under the tree's shadow, but thinking about it, it was a nice refuge from the heat. She made an effort not to frighten them, and therefore moved slowly and unthreatening. She didn't want to disturb their relaxation time. When they only took a look at her at her movement and resumed their lazing about, she released a withheld breath and looked back at the house. It seemed unchanged. No sooner had she thought, she was interrupted in her investigation by a flutter of wings, and a Beautifly was in her face. Mirella took a step back in surprise. She hadn't paid much attention to the figures in the tree top. They hadn't moved much, and she just wasn't accustomed to account for the things up in the air. She waited for a heartbeat to see what would happen. Fly hadn't acted in defence upon the Beautifly's approach, so she figured it wasn't attacking. As she studied the Beautiflys closer, she recognized that one of them were hurt and winced in sympathy. It looked pretty nasty. With half an eye on the one, that had approached her, she stepped closer to the wounded with an outstretched hand. "Hello, there. Do you need any help?" she asked in a quiet voice, staying as calm as possible. Fly added her own voice to Mirella's and made a new mist of droplets in the Beautifly's direction. She hoped the cool water would soothe the singed area. "What happened to you?" she asked them both. While Fly took up a conversation with the bugs, Mirella began searching her pockets, mumbling to herself. "I'm sure I had some berries somewhere." She didn't know how much a berry would be of help. It was hard to tell how bad the injure was, but ti was worth a try, and food was always good, she had found. Finally she found what she was looking for, and offered up a Rawst Berry for the hurt Beautifly. (Wordcount: 335)

The Beautifly chirped happily as the Surskit splashed a bubble on it. it was refreshingly cool on a hot summer day. However, its companion was injured and it was no time to float there and relax from the bubble. It head more pressing matter to take care of. "Thank you for the bubble and the berry, this is the right kind!" the Beautifly replied to the Surskit, and then grabbed a Rawst Berry from Mirella to feed the injured Beautifly. A short moment later, the injured Beautifly recovered pain, as the berry's effect ran through the bug Pokemon's body, delivering ailing nutrients to the injured site. When the Surskit got closed again, one of the Beautlfly would begin telling the Surskit what happened. "We were hanging out in the woods earlier, yes, in the heat, when I suddenly got a burny feeling. Last I saw, something hot fell from the sky I guess. Then a human led me and the Linoone and Zigzagoon to safety. The human was also carrying some more seriously injured Pokemon to the city I guess. He had quite a handful of them," the recovered Beautifly recalled. Not long after the Beautifly had received the berry, they were showing signs of recovery, and were beginning to flutter a bit again. A little bit later, a male ranger appeared with five heat-exhausted Shroomish, who looked like they were dried from the heat. He spotted Mirella and noticed the Beautifly who got better. "Oh... Hi! I am Pokemon Ranger Steven. Did you happened to give the Beautifly some berries to recover? When I saw it earlier it was looking bad. Guess I'll just give these berries to the Shroomish for now." He smiled and placed the Shroomish also under the tree shade, and handed them some berries for recovery. "Ma'am, you doing alright in this heat? I don't usually see trainers out here in this extreme weather," He added, wondering about the well being of Mirella.

Mirella was just satisfied to see the beautifly accept her berry, and drying off her forehead from all the sweat, she returned to looking at the house, while pondering if she could afford it. She didn't mind that Fly stayed with the other Pokemon. None of them looked eager to fight in this weather. "Something hot?" Fly inquired to the Beautifly's story. "You couldn't see what it was?" Being half water type, Fly felt reasonable sure she could protect herself against fire, but she had heard of times, when the weather turned so nasty, it evaporated water before it could even do any good. Though, that was just some legend... Fly listened to the rest of the tale in silence. "So there's other humans out here? I thought it was only Mirella today. I haven't seen much else." she concluded talkative, and gave the gathering another rinse of bubbles, when the Beautifly seemed to have recuperated from its burn, and they started to flutter more healthy. It was nice having her bubbles appreciated for something other than just battle or her own means of entertainment. When the ranger appeared from the woods, Mirella looked up almost startled. She hadn't thought the area around the house would be so visited. The Pokemon she didn't mind. The wild life was a joy to see. She wasn't so sure she could cope if the place was travelled much by humans though. Nonetheless, she greeted the ranger politely enough, and nodded to his question. "I happened to have a Rawst Berry on me, so better use it when needed." she explained, and averted her eyes from him back to the house. She was sweating profoundly, but it still felt manageable, and she nodded again to his follow-up question. "I'm coping. I'm just out looking at the house." She gave a shrug towards the single house present, and gazed back at him, deciding to change the topic. "How about you? Is the heat more extreme that they are saying on the television, since so many Pokemon are affected? How many rangers are at work?" She asked. It wasn't like Mirella knew much of rangers and the ongoing work they did, but every so often the News would tell about some ranger work protecting Pokemon in some disaster area long away. She couldn't remember a time when it had been necessary this close to home. (Wordcount: 399)

"Yes, hot things," The Beautifly nodded. "How did you think I got burnt?" And with some sass. "The sun was kind of bright anyways so my vision wasn't as good to see what fell on me. Some embers I guess." The bug chirped, but remained mostly still and hanging on the tree branch. This wasn't the type of weather to flutter around to show how happy you were, or how great you'll feel. You'll end up feeling exhausted and hot after moving too much.
The Ranger smiled back at Mirella, and replied. "Nah, it's alright. I've got a supplies of things dealing with the heat for weather like this." He grinned and opened his bag to reveal.. quite a stock of medicine for treating the heat. It didn't take him long to take care of all the heat-affected Shroomish. They looked more energetic, but also found a place to group together, one or two steps away from the Linoone.
"Um, what did the new said?" He questioned Mirella, as he's been at work a little earlier than usual today, being called by his supervisor, probably. "There's three in Petalburg Woods, including me. There's some other amounts throughout Hoenn region. Though the sea-side cities don't need much of a ranger, and Mt. Chimney does well with the vegetation blocking a lot of the sun below the leaves. The ashes still sucks though."

Fly giggled at the Beautifly's sass, and then said a bit more seriously. "I hope the woods isn't on fire." She would hate to see her home burn, even if she didn't live in it as closely as before her capture, but she didn't smell smoke or burning, other than the remnants from the Beautifly itself. It was just hot, and Fly blew a few more bubbles sparingly. Mirella pondered what they had actually said in the news, before answering the ranger: "They just said to stay hydrated and cool. It didn't sound like such a big deal, but I was only listening with half an ear. I might have missed something." She shrugged and smiled apologetic. She often got distracted, and rarely listened to the news all the way through. Especially when she was busy thinking about what to do through the day. She watched as he helped the Shroomish recuperate, and listened to him list the rangers at work. She raised an eyebrow at the lack of rangers at the seaside cities. "Why wouldn't the seaside cities need rangers too?" She asked, feeling a bit left out. There were wild Pokemon in the cities, and sometimes even further between water supplies than in the villages, even if they were located smack down by the sea. "Does the water there soften the heatwave to an extend?" Speaking of water, she was getting thirsty, and should probably find somewhere less occupied by resting Pokemon. She had seen what she wanted of the house for now. "Are you going back in for more Pokemon now?" she asked the ranger next, trying to figure out for how long he would stick around, and if she could let herself disappear again. (Wordcount: 288)

The ranger chuckled a bit as he heard Mirella's response, at least those radio and tv tried to keep most people indoors. However, he might have raised his chuckle voice a little about the question with seaside. "Most Pokemon by the seaside cities or routes can smell the sea salt. I heard they're crowding in those routes or cities to stay cool. Those who can't smell that well, can at least communicate or follow packs. IN times of crisis, Pokemon takes care of one another. Larger Pokemon can go to the sea just a little further than smaller Pokemon, who gathers at the shallow parts or the parts where the wave moves so they can stay cool but not completely washed away. A ranger in Rout 110, north of Slateport, was saying he's never seen that many Gulpin laying on the sand before."
Then, he seemed to pause a bit to answer Mirella's question about going back for more Pokemon. Although the answer was yes, something seemed off, but then he can't tell Mirella everything right? "Yes... I'm going back to look for some greatly distressed Pokemon from the heat that needs medicine. Most of the ones I past by seemed to be doing well in the shades or digging some mud and sand around." He then checked the time on his device and headed off again, disappearing into the woods.
OOC: well whether or not you follow him into the route/woods, my next post is gonna try to thicken the plot anyways. also i tote wrote this to remind myself what to do next post

The ranger's response to her question, didn't actually answer where all those Pokemon got drinking water, but then Mirella hadn't asked that in particular. It made her happy though, she hadn't decided to go to the beach today. It sounded like it could be more than crowded. It did put Mirella in a bit of a dilemma though too. She was done looking at houses, and if every shade was occupied by Pokemon and humans alike, it could be difficult to find a place to be alone. She didn't know what to do with the rest of the day, and she didn't want to go home. She liked it outdoors, even if she was almost melting on the spot. Mirella watched the ranger disappear into the trees again, replaying his facial expression at his answer in her head. She wasn't an expert in reading people, but hadn't he been evading something with his answer. If the Pokemon was so good at taking care of themselves, what was burning them like that? Mirella sighed and squared her shoulders. "Come on, Fly, we are going to investigate something." she told the Surskit, end set course into the forest where the ranger had disappeared. Fly waved goodbye to the Beautiflys and followed suit. Mirella wasn't too comfortable at her decision to follow the ranger. She knew curiosity was a dangerous thing, killed the Skitty and all that, but for once she decided not to be deterred by her misgivings. As the ranger had seemed a bit closed off about what was really going on, Mirella didn't actually try to catch up to him. Could be he would just sent her back home, if he discovered her. Instead she stayed hidden behind trees, if she caught sight of him, and walked in silence otherwise. She let Fly run about as she pleased. Surskit belonged to the forest area around Petalburg. It wasn't odd for a Surskit to be about. (Wordcount: 325)

Thinking that something was off while communicating with the ranger, Mirella headed off to the deeper forest and see what was going on for herself. Perhaps the Ranger had the responsibility of confidentiality, or appearing to be a reliable person, like maybe a doctor would, that he was a bit hesitant to tell her everything about that happened. Walking quietly and trying to stay off from possibly seeing the ranger again, the young trainer explored to see what might happened.
At first, it was nothing but the weather feeling as hot as it did five minutes ago, and also the house she was seeing was fading away as she walked further. Petalburg Woods did have dense trees covering the forest ground with shades from the leaves and branches, but that didn't stop the air from feeling so hot. There were a number of normal type and bug type Pokemon just laying on the ground, under the shades, as the ranger had said. Their eyes just followed MIrella as she walked past, but too tired to instigate a fight unless she would really want to. There were also flying Pokemon up in the tree. Some of them were humming, but mostly they were just as exhausted from the heat.
Suddenly, a loud Screech could be heard from somewhere in the forest. No one was really sure where it came from, but for a second, the heat in the area felt like it rose a little bit, and then went back to that "just slightly cooler but it's still really hot" temperature. What was that noise just now?

Despite the shade from the trees in the forest, Mirella couldn't even feel a drop in temperature, when she got away from the direct glare of the sun. It was like trying to walk away from something you thought were the source of the heat, but instead found that it changed nothing, and something else must be at fault, though the source was inexplicable out of sight. It was rather disconcerting. Unwilling to change her mind now however, Mirella went on, ignoring the groups of Pokemon that tried to find relief under the shades. The walk was exhausting. She had to dry her forhead of sweat a bit too often, and the hot air felt constricting to her airways, pressing on her entire system. Even Fly stopped running about, and just stayed by her side, making her small bubbles with longer and longer pauses in between. Mirella was just checking how much water she had left, when the Screech penetrated the area, and made her give a startled jump. She looked around, trying to determine where the sound had come from, but there was no obvious pointers. She barely registered that the sound had been followed by an extra pressure of heat. Unsure where it had come from, she decided just to go with the direction she had kept until now. (Wordcount: 221)

Undeterred by the intensity of heat, Mirella seemed to keep going through the Petalburg Woods, to explore, if possible, what strange things was happening today. She did hear the loud screech, but nothing seemed to happen at least. Of course, where could that voice be coming from? After that Screech had rang through the forest, there was silence and the agony of heat again. There don't seemed to be anything for the next several minutes.
However, just as everything seemed to be back to the lame summer heat, if Mirella or her Pokemon had paid attention, a figure seemed to be moving fast in the distant in the woods. The figure also seemed to be strangely a little too active in this type of weather. There was no way that the figure was running in this heat, right? Perhaps it was riding on a Pokemon? Or was this just an illusion projected from the heat?

It was quiet for a while yet after the eerie sound, and Mirella walked as silent as possible both not to give her position away, and be able to hear if anything strange happened. It was something out the corner of her eye that caught her attention instead. A movement that rushed away with a speed that seemed impossible in the heat. Fly had seen it too, as she froze on the spot. Mirella took a few extra breaths of air before moving again. Whatever it was didn't fit with anything else in the forest, and since she had already set out to figure out what was going on, Mirella tried to pick up her speed and follow whatever had moved somewhere ahead. Moving out again, the fisherman continued through the forest. While they didn't meet anyone who looked like the fast moving figure from earlier, they stumbled into Ranger Steven again.
"Hello, it's you again! I guess you're handling the heat quite well so far, but don't underestimate the heat, okay?" He greeted, while his Furret and Linoone were tending some injured or sickly Pokemon that seemed to passed out from the heat, or just chatting with them to comfort them.
Then, before she could say anything in response, the Ranger tossed out a Pokeball to released his Chimecho. "Use Safeguard!" He hollered.
Up in the sky, a loud screech echoed, followed by a volley of flames fell downward, and if the safeguard wasn't there to protect the area, somebody could get hurt, or some plants could get scorched. Some of the injured Pokemon seemed to flinched or ducked for cover on their own. Meanwhile, the Furret and Linoone looked up at the sky and saw the flames being cancelled by the safeguard, but they looked really dazed about what was going on.

When Mirella stumbled into the ranger once more, she immediately felt embarrassed. He had told her to go home, and she obviously hadn't followed his directions. His response was far from reprimanding though, and Mirella could therefore only nod to his estimation. She was handling the heat so far, and she was being careful in her own opinion. Fly tried to make a single bubble in the air, but the heat was too intense for it to amount to much more than a puff. Mirella squatted down and gave the Surskit a comforting pet. She wasn't exactly looking to the sky, and got quite the surprise, when Steven hollered an attack. She nearly jumped out of her skin, and looked upwards in fright. "What's going on?" she asked bewildered and scared. Any fire wasn't good in heat, and she could only be grateful the heat hadn't lasted so long it had managed to dry the water from the earth, but it was still scary to think of forest fires. "Fly, try a water sport instead. If fire is brewing, we stand a better chance drenching the area." Fly nodded to Mirella's suggestion, and tried to soak the field around them as best as she could, while Mirella looked to the Ranger again. "I have more water pokemon. Will they be of help?"(Wordcount: 222)
